Course Description

This is a comparative course about both the First World War and about different ways of looking at the war.  It is not a chronological regurgitation of causation, battles, and events, and  the subject material covered will be selective in nature.  Through lectures and assigned readings this course will explore topics such as the argument for war, propaganda, the literary war, the soldiers' experience, nationalism, the nature of battle, the home front, and gender and war.

The majority of the required readings for this course will be available online through the readings and discussion link from the H482 homepage.   Preparation and participation is expected of all students for the class discussion component of the course.  At the fourth year level, greater emphasis will be placed on student participation and discussion than in the lower level survey courses.
